Some fungi are known to cleave DMSP and liberate the climate-active gas DMS, including key pathogens of grasses and corals. However, few studies have looked at isolating DMSP- degrading fungi, and none from marine sources. Alice is using classical cultivation methods to isolate and characterise novel fungi that cleave DMSP. She is also using molecular biology and environmental ecology to identify the fungal DMSP catabolic enzymes and establish their importance in diverse environments.
