Dr. Alejandro Morales-Florez

Senior Research Associate

Alejandro is working on identifying novel DMSP synthesis enzymes in the perennial plant Wollastonia biflora (sea daisy). For this, he is combining RNA-seq to identify candidate DMSP synthesis enzymes with chromatography techniques to purify the activity of the missing enzymes and identify them. Furthermore, Alejandro is working to identify the key residues and mechanism that allows the key Spartina anglica SDC enzyme to function in DMSP synthesis and not in ornithine metabolism. He hopes to elucidate the true diversity of high-level DMSP production in plants.
